THERE was a big row rumbling on last year when Chancellor Rishi Sunak denied suggesting people working in the arts should retrain amid the Covid pandemic. Luckily for us here on the Isle of Wight, the team at Spotlight, based at Shanklin Theatre, defiantly refused to consider any such proposal. In December they ploughed ahead with their Christmas pantomime, which was devastatingly cut short due to a further lockdown, and remained determined despite suffering a huge financial loss. Buffered somewhat since, with a government grant from the Culture Recovery Fund, they ensured the Show Must Go On. And so, on Thursday night, they lifted the curtain on their annual weekly summer show.

We’re headed towards the last hours of Day 1 of the second annual Triple J Requestival – a full five days of requests on the national youth broadcaster – and we’ve all really hit the Cooker Mode button hard. It is the very first day and it’s already gone sideways in the best way possible.
