The ruling BJP government is set to announce its eighth Annual Budget on February 1, 2021. The year 2020 was a challenging year for all major economies, including India, as governments imposed strict measures to limit the virus spread but this impacted economic growth.

Budget 2021: Gems, jewellery industry seeks cut in import duty, GST
The gem and jewellery industry has a lot expectation from the Modi government in the upcoming Union Budget 2021-22. The industry wants the Centre to reduce customs duty on gold, withdraw of tax collected at source (TCS), cut in import duty on polished precious and semi-precious gemstones.
According to Ashish Pethe, the chairman of All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council (GJC), the government should assess the adverse impact of higher import duty on the jewellery trade and suggested to cut the customs duty to 4 per cent from the current 12.5 per cent.Â ....

r face a surge on smuggling and other criminal activity, an industry bodies has warned.
The All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council (GJC) is seeking a reduction from 12.5 per cent to four per cent on gold, silver and platinum in next month s budget.
If the tax rate is kept at this level it will encourage smuggling and encourage people to do unorganised business, the council s chairman Anish Pethe told

Only 10% jewellers opt for certification, finding hallmarked gold jewellery for weddings gets difficult: Report
The number has stayed low even though the Centre extended the deadline for hallmarking from June 1, 2020 to January 15, 2021.

Only 30,000 jewellers of 300,000 jewellers in the country have opted for hallmark gold, which will likely make gold ornaments and jewellery scarce for families ahead of the summer wedding season.
The low number comes even after the Centre extended the deadline from June 1, 2020 to January 15, 2021, The Economic Times reported.
The weddings planned for this year have risen after a host of ceremonies were cancelled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic and lockdowns April, May and June are especially popular, with May alone having 15 “auspicious days” for weddings, it report said. ....
