New HF Uncommon After COVID-19, but Rare Cases Pose Quandary

April 28, 2021
The largest study to date to track COVID-19 survivors for signs and symptoms of new-onset heart failure (HF) has found that new diagnoses are rare following hospitalization for severe SARS-CoV-2 infection, but in a small and worrying subset, HF appears to arise without any previous underlying disease or risk factors.
The potential for SARS-CoV-2 to have a direct impact on the heart has been a recurring topic over the past 14 months, as has debate over who and how to follow patients for possible persistent cardiac damage. Moreover, other viral illnesses such as influenza have also been known to precipitate new HF, the authors note in a research letter published in the ....

Can Heart Failure Show Up in COVID Patients Out of the Blue?

email article
It was rare but possible for COVID-19 patients without cardiovascular disease (CVD) or cardiovascular risk factors to develop new heart failure (HF) during their illness, according to a center in New York.
A retrospective analysis of 6,439 hospitalized COVID-19 patients found that 0.6% had new HF and 6.6% had a history of HF, reported Anuradha Lala, MD, of Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, and colleagues.
As shown in their research letter online in the
Journal of the American College of Cardiology, out of the 37 people who experienced new HF, 13 had presented with shock (four cardiogenic, six septic, three mixed) and five with acute coronary syndrome. Just eight had neither CVD nor any related risk factors, whereas 14 had a history of CVD and another 15 at least one risk factor. ....

Language Matters During This 'Exciting Time' in Heart Failure

email article
Spurred by great enthusiasm for the latest treatments for heart failure, some groups are putting greater emphasis on clearly defining what exactly heart failure is, and how to communicate it to patients without demoralizing them.
There are now five classes of life-saving heart failure drugs, as angiotensin receptor-neprilysin inhibitors and SGLT2 inhibitors were added to heart failure treatment algorithms in new guidance from the American College of Cardiology (ACC).
This is an exciting time, said Anuradha Lala, MD, of Mount Sinai Health System in New York City. Now our efforts need to be focused on implementation, making sure that patients who will benefit from these medications are actually on these medications. ....
