The 2021 Kentucky Derby winner, Medina Spirit, failed a drug test after the race, putting a new stain on a sport troubled by doping problems and placing thoroughbred horse racing s most recognizable personality, the Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, under uncomfortable scrutiny.
If he is disqualified, Medina Spirit will be stripped of the Derby title and its winning purse, and become only the third horse in the 147-year history of the race to receive such a penalty after finishing first. The colt cannot be disqualified until a second sample, collected at the same time as the first, confirms the result in a test expected in the coming weeks. A preliminary drug sample showing an excess trace of an anti-inflammatory drug has put Medina Spirit’s Kentucky Derby victory in danger of being lost to disqualification. And it has put trainer Bob Baffert in the crosshairs of scrutiny that could boil over into a seismic racing scandal.
Baffert, who faced formal medication scrutiny the year after Justify won the 2018 Triple Crown, confirmed the test at a news conference Sunday morning at his Churchill Downs barn in the company of lawyer Craig Robertson. He also denied ever giving Medina Spirit betamethasone, a medication that is legal to a certain limit in Kentucky. ....

Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit drug test comes back positive

Though the use of betamethasone is permitted in Kentucky as a therapeutic, any race-day positive is a violation. New rules went into effect last August that replaced a 10-picogram-per-milliliter threshold with the stricter “limit of detection,” a standard triggered by the lowest quantity of a substance that can be confidently distinguished from the absence of that substance.
Baffert called the positive test “a complete injustice,” saying Medina Spirit never has been treated with betamethasone. He said he will conduct his own investigation and comply with the KHRC.
“Yesterday I got the biggest gut punch in racing for something that I didn’t do,” Baffert said. “It’s disturbing. It’s an injustice to the horse. … ....
