Dido and Aeneas – a timeless opera in a timeless theatre

The Manoel Theatre is soon set to raise the curtain on Dido and Aeneas as this year’s beloved annual opera – and Malta’s historic national theatre has overcome all odds to bring it to the stage.

A tragic tale of love and loss, royalty and witches, stormy seas and magical misdirection. Although this sounds like the makings of a modern hit movie, in fact, this dramatic story thrilled its first audiences on stage more than 300 years ago.

Such are the universal and timeless themes of Dido and Aeneas, the first – and ultimately, the only – opera written by great English baroque composer Henry Purcell, based on a libretto by Nahum Tate. The opera was inspired by book IV of Virgil’s poem The Aeneid, with Purcell translating both the epic tale and its deeper ideas regarding death and deception for a then-contemporary audience. ....

Baroque opera at the Manoel Theatre

The Manoel Theatre is next week presenting the opera Dido and Aeneas, written by English baroque composer Henry Purcell, with a libretto by Nahum Tate.
The plot sees Dido, the widowed Queen of Carthage, entertaining the Trojan prince Aeneas, who was shipwrecked on his way to Italy. Witches plot Dido’s destruction and a sorceress conjures a storm to break out when the royal couple are hunting, and the impersonation of Mercury by one of her coven. The storm duly breaks and the courtiers hasten back to town, while the false Mercury tells Aeneas he must leave Dido and sail for Italy. ....

WATCH: Malta's Franciscan Friars Capture Christmas Sprit With Beautiful O Holy Night Performance

While we might not be able to spend Christmas the way we hoped we would this year, there’s no excuse for not spreading the joy this festive season.
And a group of Franciscan Capuchin Friars in Malta have done just that with their rendition of O Holy Night.
This version is particularly special, with the brothers of the Franciscan order coming together on video to perform and sing the festive song. Moreover, those who didn’t actually perform took part by lip-syncing the lyrics with their loved ones by their side, including children and extended family.
Though this Christmas will be different from what we are used to, with restrictions still in place because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this goes to show that you can still spread the joy encapsulated by the holiday through the power of music. ....
