It’s about quality, not quantity. That was my feeling when I delved into Cornish castles. There aren’t oodles; possibly due to being a separatist community in the South West. The Normans were great castle builders, erecting fortresses to cow the defeated English into submission. Perhaps in Cornwall it wasn’t necessary, well, not on such a scale anyway.
There are around 20 castles in the county, which is not a huge number, but there are exquisite examples other counties would give their touristy right arm for. Here follows my countdown of the top eight, and in the best traditions, I will leave best to last. ....

Affordable housing defined, and where it already exists on Aquidneck Island

What is affordable housing?
“Generally speaking, housing is considered to be affordable if no more than 30% of an owner’s/renter’s income goes toward housing costs (mortgage/rent, utilities, etc.),” Ronald Wolanski, the planning director for Middletown, explained in an email.
“To be counted toward a town’s 10% goal, in addition to meeting the 30% of income rule, the housing unit must be subsidized, meaning that some public funding is used to develop or maintain the housing,” Wolanski added.
Typical sources of funding are the Community Development Block Grant program and initiatives through Rhode Island Housing.
“The property must also contain a provision in the deed that restricts the sale or lease of the unit to qualified low-[moderate] income families at the applicable affordable rate for a minimum of 30 years, Wolanski wrote.  ....

Manley Makes His Exit

Austin police Chief Brian Manley announced Friday that he will retire on March 28, following a year in which criminal justice activists and community members have called for him to resign. That call began over how Manley handled revelations that a former assistant chief regularly used racist language, then accelerated following the violent response to Black Lives Matter protesters his officers engaged in over the summer.
Born and raised in Austin, Manley began his career as an APD patrol officer in 1991. He steadily moved up the chain, serving as lieutenant, commander, assistant chief, and, finally, chief of staff to Art Acevedo before being named interim chief when Acevedo departed to lead the Houston Police Department in 2016. He rose to national prominence for his handling of the three-week bo ....
