ELLWOOD CITY Though April 1 is a dedicated day for tricksters, pranksters and fools, it also marks the start of Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) and borough officials want residents to know that violence is no joke.
Leaders of the Lawrence County Crisis Shelter partnered with Ellwood City officials to raise awareness for the prevalence and prevention of sexual assault by putting up teal bows and yard signs on Lawrence Avenue Tuesday. I feel like we always hit New Castle with outreach and awareness and we wanted to start getting into more boroughs, just so more people know that we re here and that we re a support if they re struggling with domestic violence or sexual assault, said Rachel Pearce, an advocate and prevention education specialist at Lawrence County Crisis Shelter.

But for Ellwood City area residents that also is the day they recognize one of their hometown heroes, who was one of the first people injured in the Japanese bombardment and one of the few survivors left from that fateful day. Army Staff Sgt. Joseph Michael Gasper had been too ill to attend related ceremonies in recent years and now he has joined his fallen colleagues.
