Four weekend shootings in Elkton latest in month of gun violence

ELKTON - Investigators are seeking help from the community after four separate shootings in four different Elkton neighborhoods over the weekend - raising the total number of gunplay incidents in town to seven in less than two weeks, police reported Monday. A 17-year-old male and 49-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds in the weekend shootings, according to Elkton Police Department officials, who further reported that an EPD officer has been credited with saving the life of the elder gunshot victim. EPD Chief Carolyn Rogers referred to the shooting incidents from Friday night through Sunday afternoon as an unprecedented weekend of gun violence.

Dr. Joseph Clarence Cox, DMD, 41, remained in the Etowah County Detention Center Tuesday afternoon. GPD Public Information Officer Sgt. Marcus Hill said search warrants were executed Monday at Cox s office, Gadsden Dental, located on Rainbow Drive. Hill asked anyone with information related to the charges to contact Det. Anthony Devine at 256-549-4653. According to online court records, Cox entered a guilty plea in circuit court in 2013 on two misdemeanor harassment complaints. He was found guilty on the charge in Fort Payne municipal court, appealed to circuit court, then entered the guilty plea in connection with complaints made in 2012 by a former female employee.

Gadsden dentist arrested on sex abuse, rape, sodomy charges Updated 2:04 PM; A Gadsden dentist was arrested this morning on several sex crime charges. Sgt. Marcus Hill of Gadsden police said Joseph Clarence Cox, 41, has been charged with sexual abuse, rape, and sodomy. He was booked into the Etowah County Detention Center and is being held without bond. Hill said search warrants were executed at his office, Gadsden Dental, on Rainbow Drive, and at his home. A sign on the door told patients the office was closed. Anyone with information is asked to contact Det. Anthony Devine at (256) 549-4653. According to court records, Cox pleaded guilty in 2013 to two counts of misdemeanor harassment, was sentenced to 90 days suspended sentence and paid a $500 fine. A former worker in Cox’s office in DeKalb County told police she was fired after she turned down his advances, which included suggestive comments and spanking her.
