Ontario reports 2,320 new coronavirus cases and 32 more deaths; positivity rate continues to decline

Ontario reported more than 2,300 new COVID-19 cases and 32 additional deaths on Wednesday, as the province’s positivity rate continues to decline.
The province reported 2,716 cases on Monday, 3,216 on Sunday and 2,864 on Saturday.
The seven-day rolling average has now dropped to 2,826, a notable decline from 3,432 seven days ago.
Of the latest fatalities, one person was between 20 and 39 years old, five were between 40 and 59 years old, 18 were between 60 and 79 years old and eight were 80 years old and over. Ontario’s virus-related death toll now stands at 8,374.
More than 3,000 lab-confirmed cases of variants of concern were identified in the past 24 hours, with over 2,900 being the dominant B.1.1.7 variant, which first emerged in the United Kingdom. ....

Provinces defend health restrictions as COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations rise

In response to the pressure, the Ontario Hospital Association said nearly all Greater Toronto Area hospitals would close their pediatric units to help accommodate a surge in COVID-19 cases. Children at those hospitals will be sent to Toronto s Hospital for Sick Children for care, according to association president Anthony Dale. ....

Ontario COVID-19: Health official believes worst of third pandemic wave is behind us

After several days of a consistent downward trend in the number of COVID-19 patients in intensive care in Ontario, the CEO of the Ontario Hospital Association says he believes we’ve seen the worst of the third pandemic wave.
Anthony Dale told CTV News on Friday that after reaching 900 COVID-19 patients in ICUs on May 1, hospitals are seeing a very slow decompression.
“We ve probably seen the worst day of this this third wave, and that means we have hope ahead of us,” Dale said. “We have better days ahead as we slowly climb down from this third wave. It will take continued sacrifice, though, and very hard work by all of us, if we re to do that.” ....
