Today, as in ages past, some of our brightest minds are speaking from the pulpit, offering insights both theological and secular. As we emerge from a pandemic, faith leaders offer perspectives that transcend charts, graphs, maps, data points and social media. Following, we continue our occasional compilation of wisdom culled from recent columns in the Faith Matters series on Saturday’s Religion Page.
From The Rev. Dr. Lloyd Parrill, UCC minister, retired: “Sadly, now we are engaged in a great civil and cultural war. It is an attack upon truth itself. The press is assailed as ‘fake news,’ the findings of science are debunked (global warming), and the exercise of free speech is taken to allow sedition and insurrection as ‘patriotic.’ I pray this nation and foundation on which it stands shall not only long endure, but thrive, with liberty and justice for all.” (Jan. 30, 2021)

Grief Recovery Group starts Monday ORANGE The GriefShare grief recovery seminar and support group will begin to meet in person again at Crossroads Church each Monday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., starting June 7. The church is located at 92 New Athol.

ATHOL The North Quabbin Veterans Outreach will honor those service members who have passed away through a display on the Uptown Common. Designer Emily Boughton reflects on the display on the uptown common in Athol: “Just as the lives of those who have passed live in our hearts, so, too, the red ribbons of service and sacrifice move endlessly in the wind.”

The 4th Christmas Chinese Auction was held recently in Dept. 8 at Starretts. The 176 items, donated by Starrett employees and local businesses, netted $3,525. Proceeds are distributed equally between the Athol Santa Fund, Orange Santa Fund and Children’s Hospital, Boston.
■The Athol Santa Fund received a boost of $342 to bring the total to $3,121. The goal is $11,000.
■Merchants in downtown Athol will offer late-night shopping Friday night, when many of the stores will stay open until 10 p.m. to accommodate last-minute shoppers. Armed with a cache of candy canes, Santa will also be on Main Street to visit with shoppers and businesses. Christmas carolers will circulate along Main Street.
