Ending abortion will require “prayer, personal conversion and good works,” along with a renewed focus on freedom and the sacrifice it entails, say area pro-life leaders.
Some 200 attendees gathered July 17 for the Pro-Life Union of Greater Philadelphia’s “Freedom for the Pre-Born” rally, which began with Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of SS. Peter and Paul.
In his homily, celebrant and Cathedral rector Father Dennis Gill described abortion as “the greatest evil in our day and in any day,” since it represents “a total denial of who God is and what he has done for us in making us, and in giving us the responsibility we have over life.” ....

Philly receives 224 guns in buyback program offering grocery store gift cards


More than 100 guns had been turned in by noon, quickly exhausting the supply of gift cards until Brown s, led by Philadelphia grocer Jeff Brown, provided additional gift cards. 
There’s a difference between just asking people to turn in guns and we did that last year – and offering them an incentive, and it shows that this works, said Bilal Qayyum, president of the Fathers Day Rally Committee. 
The Greenfield Foundation, a Philadelphia-based charitable organization run by Emily Clark, offered $10,000 in funding for the incentive program. Clark said gun violence should be considered everyone s problem.
City Councilmember Cindy Bass, who participated the event, said the program helped address two critical needs in the city.  ....

Homicides are currently up 10% and shootings are up a whopping 37%. Police say 13 of the victims are children.
An Uber Eats driver was among those shot on Wednesday afternoon on the 4700 block of Chestnut Street around 4 p.m.
Police say the driver was on a delivery with a male associate when they got caught up in a road rage incident with the driver of a white Dodge Ram pick-up truck. The Dodge driver then got out and fired 11 shots into the victim s car, police said. ....
