Lincoln, Nebraska, July 1, 2021 Carrie Heitman can still remember the moment when as an undergraduate visiting for the first time Chaco Culture National Historic Park became the cornerstone of her academic career in anthropology.
You have to take this 30-mile road off the beaten path to get there, and then you drop into the canyon and there are these really majestic geological features, Heitman said. Sen. Martin Heinrich is asking the Biden administration to prohibit future leasing of all minerals on federal land in a 10-mile area surrounding Chaco Culture National Historical Park.
In a May 7 letter to Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, the New Mexico Democrat said an administrative action would protect the region until “permanent protection can be secured legislatively.” ....

New Mexico plants imperiled by oil and gas to be reviewed for protections

Oil and gas drilling could threaten two rare New Mexico plants in the San Juan Basin region in northwest New Mexico – an area known for heavy natural gas extraction.
That’s why the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced it was reviewing the status of the Aztec gilia and Clover’s cactus under the Endangered Species Act which could receive either threatened or endangered status.
Such a listing would require a recovery plan that could mean known habitat for the plants could be closed off to further development.
The decision to review the plants’ status was made via a 90-day review by the Service following pressure from environmental groups. ....
