Children may not be as infectious in spreading SARS-CoV-2 to others as previously thought, according to new University of Manitoba-led research in
Canadian Medical Association Journal).
Our findings have important public health and clinical implications, writes principal investigator Dr. Jared Bullard, associate professor, pediatrics/child health and medical microbiology/infectious diseases, Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba and associate medical director, Cadham Provincial Laboratory in Winnipeg, Manitoba. If younger children are less capable of transmitting infectious virus, daycare, in-person school and cautious extracurricular activities may be safe to continue, with appropriate precautions in place, and with lower risk to child care staff, educators and support staff than initially anticipated. ....

Two new Canada Research Chairs awarded prestigious Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowships

UM Canada Research Chairs Dr. Galen Wright and Dr. Britt Drögemöller, faculty members in the Max Rady College of Medicine, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, were recently awarded a pair of one-year fellowships that will allow them to collaborate on neurogenomics and precision medicine with Stellenbosch University, South Africa.
The Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship program, founded in 2013, is designed to develop long-term collaborations between universities in Africa and North America. The project is one of 56 through which the program will pair African-born scholars in North America with institution in Africa to collaborate on research, graduate training and mentoring activities in the com ....

As it has been almost a year since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in Manitoba, people have had to adjust to the times.
One of the changes brought on during the pandemic is virtual health-care appointments.
With it being implemented so rapidly, researchers at the University of Manitoba are starting a study to look at the impact of the service on both patients and health-care workers.
Researchers in the department of psychiatry at the Max Rady College of Medicine in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences are inviting both health-care workers and patients who have experienced virtual health care during the pandemic, the university said in a news release. ....
