With the Christmas ham demolished and gifts distributed, attention turned to the Boxing Day sales in Rotorua.
Rotorua Central Mall general manager Peter Faulkner described the Boxing Day atmosphere at the mall as manic .
We
went in through town, had a coffee at Capers and thought it was reasonably quiet but we got to the mall and I ve never seen the car park so busy, he said.
I think it s a combination of things. The retailers are putting on some good sales and that is attracting a lot of attention. It s a continuation of a strong interest in going out and getting some retail therapy. ....

New Zealanders make record number of transactions per second
New Zealanders have set a new record for the amount of transactions per second today.
As of 2pm, $166 million had been put through the tills.
The busiest time of the day has likely passed, with a peak of 204 transactions per second at 12.30pm, a new record.
The previous record was 188 per second and the daily average about 60.
Paymark chief executive Maxine Elliott said they had to work hard to ensure the retail network was fully operational throughout today.
Paymark had seen about 3 million transactions processed since midnight.

Final sales figures for the day are yet to be collated, but Paymark - which processes most of New Zealand s Eftpos payments - reported that, as of 2pm, Kiwi consumers had already spent more than $166 million.
The busiest time of day has likely 12.30pm when a peak of 204 transactions per second were processed. ....

Christmas Eve is generally the busiest
shopping day of the year and 2020 is proving to be no
different.

While final sales figures for
the day are yet to be collated, Paymark can report that as
of 2pm Kiwi consumers had already spent in excess of $166
million through the tills today. The busiest time of day has
likely passed with 1230pm seeing a peak of 204 transactions
per second. The previous record was 188 transactions per
second (the daily average is usually around 60 transactions
per second).
