CUMBERLAND, Maine Anna Crowley Redding, a Maine author of books for young readers, knows exactly when inspiration struck and gave her the idea for her most recent work.
It happened when she learned a remarkable fact about the tree Isaac Newton was sitting under when he saw an apple fall, the apple that got him thinking about gravity and the laws of physics in ways that transformed our understanding of the cosmos. It turns out that nearly four centuries after Newton sat under it, that tree is still alive and still producing fruit. Now THAT is a story, Redding immediately thought. ....

Sometimes, after a story is published, writers get pleasant surprises. That happened Sunday Feb. 28, the day a story I wrote about clam chowder appeared in the Maine Sunday Telegram.
The story included a few paragraphs about a 1939 clam chowder cookoff at the Lafayette Hotel in Portland, and the children’s book recently written about the event by local author Anna Crowley Redding. That afternoon, I received a tweet from Maine artist Caren Michel, who said she is the granddaughter of the chef who won the contest. ....

I still remember the worst clam chowder I’ve ever had. For years, I was a judge at Portland’s Great Chili and Chowder Challenge at the Holiday Inn by the Bay, an annual February fundraiser that, even during snowstorms, drew large crowds of chowder lovers eager to taste chowders of all kinds prepared by Portland chefs. We sampled a lot of wonderful steamy, creamy, classic New England chowders, but the one I remember best had the consistency of wallpaper paste. The “broth” was gluey and tasted more like the flou ....
