We have welcomed the start of work in Finland to excavate the first tunnels for final disposal of the country’s spent nuclear fuel.
Underground research has been carried out at Olkiluoto, located around 170 miles north west of Helsinki since 2004 and construction of the underground disposal facility started in 2015.
The repository is being constructed to a depth of 400–430 metres and already has approximately 10 kilometres of excavated tunnels. During final disposal operations, there will be some 40 kilometres of new tunnels. ....

Excavation gets underway in Finland for world’s first final deposition nuclear tunnels
Plans to dispose of spent nuclear fuel in underground tunnels has reached a major milestone with excavation work getting started on site in Olkiluoto in Finland following verification by the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority of Finland (STUK).
The facility, which is owned and operated by Posiva, is claimed to be a world first and will initially have five tunnels that will be excavated over the next 18 months but the network of tunnels is expected to be expanded to around 100 during the 100 year operational period of the facility. The first five tunnels and access tunnels are being built by Finland-based contractor YIT. ....
