Indian diamond industry: Looking forward

Lately, the Indian diamond industry, on the whole, had been reeling with the effects of the implementation of GST and demonetization with several diamond polishers losing their jobs. The Indian diamond trade has asked the Government for an amendment in taxation provisions to allow the sale of rough diamonds in the Special Notified Zone (SNZ) in Mumbai; and exemption of two-per cent equalization levy on rough diamond sales. According to industry members, miners could pay a ‘turnover tax’ not exceeding 0.16%, which is the prevailing rate in Belgium. Labourers are also demanding implementation of labour laws and Factory Acts in the diamond factories, claiming that around 10 polishers across the state had committed suicide in the last few months due to joblessness. ....

Remember trade shows? In decades gone by, they were very popular. They were still pulling in the crowds in January a
nd February last year, when diamantaires would routinely fly across the world to do business face-to-face. Then the pandemic came along a
nd wiped out virtually a whole calendar of 2020 events. And now the same thing s happening for 2021, as we hear of a second set of postponements and cancelations. Last year organizers canceled the June 2020 edition of JCK Las Vegas, the biggest jewelry show in North America. This week they announced that they couldn t go ahead with the June 2021 show either. They re now pinning their hopes on enough of a Covid recovery to allow them to reschedule for late August. HourUniverse, successor to Baselworld, was supposed to take place in Switzerland in April, but has now been put back, provisionally, to late June, though it may well be subject to ....

2020 proved to be quite a challenge with regards to hosting in-person trade fairs, and although online alternatives accelerated the digital revolution within the industry, there is no doubt that in-person viewing and buying is still very much the norm.
In light of recent news and updates of the Covid vaccination programs in many countries, Trade Fair organizers are cautiously optimistic that the shows will be able to return to physical events, rather than their online alternatives. In some cases, they are looking to host hybrid - physical & online - shows. Organisers have announced their plans, with some postponing or even cancelling the show for 2021. The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), India’s trade body for the jewellery industry, launched its virtual International Gem & Jewellery Show (e-IGJS) on 18 January.
Featuring 100 exhibitors from across India, the e-IGJS registered more than 500 buyers from 56 countries, including Australia and New Zealand.
