Backus American Legion gaming partnership achieves record $95,000 in charitable donations

The Backus American Legion Charitable Gaming Partnership donated a record $95,392 to charitable causes in 2020 and passed the $1 million mark in total assistance in the history of its program.
The partnership, consisting of the Legion and its longtime gaming affiliate, Willard’s Saloon & Eatery in Backus, also paid $114,230 in state taxes and another $7,469 in federal taxes, reaching another milestone: $1.1 million in state and federal taxes paid since 1991. The state again was the largest single recipient of funding.
The amount donated was more than double the $42,712 donated in 2019, a 123% increase and it exceeded the program’s previous record year donations of $79,372 in 2018. ....

The former Backus School, now Foothills Christian Academy, is the host of a small lending library.
Donna Chastain, first, second and third grade teacher with Foothills Christian Academy, thought the school and city residents could use a library.
I haven t really seen that many, Chastain said. I ve just heard of other people on social media putting them in their yards. It s great for neighborhoods that don t have a library and neighborhoods that are walkable. That fits Backus pretty well, so I just thought it would be a nice thing to have so people could get more books to read. ....

As of Tuesday, March 2, the Kitchigami Mobile Library resumed service.
The spring schedule for March through June is available to view at the mobile library, at local library buildings and at http://www.krls.org/.
Masks must still be worn while inside the Kitchigami Regional Library System Bookmobile. Only one household will be allowed inside at a time.
Local dates include:
Hackensack: 1-2 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at First and Whipple streets near the city park.
Backus: 9:30-11 a.m. the second and fourth Thursdays of the month at Foothills Christian Academy. ....

The group distributed free boxes of food in Backus and at the Pequot Lakes School parking lot in Pequot Lakes on Nov. 21.
With little fanfare, a group distributed free boxes of food in Backus and Pequot Lakes on Nov. 21. A second food box distribution will take place Saturday, Dec. 19, in the Pequot Lakes Middle School parking lot on a first-come, first-served basis and available to anyone.
Locally, distribution was organized by Bruce Rauma, pastor at Legacy Church in Pequot Lakes along with other volunteers. The group s first large distribution had little more than Facebook posts and word of mouth to attract families to pick up nutritious boxes of food, but plenty of recipients still lined up. ....
