Nuclear energy has a role to play in helping the UK meet the government’s latest climate targets, according to Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit head of analysis Jonathan Marshall. This week the government announced its new aim to reduce emissions by 78% by 2035 compared to 1990 levels. Previously, the UK had a target of reducing emissions by 80% by 2050. Marshall emphasised that a range of different energy schemes are likely to be needed to enable the UK to reach the ambitious new targets. “These targets are quite demanding so ruling out anything is probably a bad idea,” he said. “Having as much solar and wind as possible is useful but the different characteristics of nuclear mean it has benefits for the general energy mix. ....

Sizewell C uncertainty mounts as potential backer rules out support for nuclear plant Legal & General (L&G) has ruled out funding the proposed Sizewell C nuclear power plant in Suffolk. L&G has not spoken publicly about its plans but according to the Telegraph, one of its investment service consultants said in a written response to a pension-holder: “I have had it confirmed that Legal & General will not be investing in the Sizewell C nuclear power plant.” But the project will also need institutional investors, which EDF argues can make stable returns over the decades of a reactor’s life. They say the proposed Sizewell C site has far more important wildlife and environment than Wylfa, which has been described as the best site available globally for a new power plant. But despite experts expecting it to get the go-ahead, the Planning Inspectorate has recommended that the Wylfa Newydd project site regarded as the best be rejected by the Government. ....
