Asolo Repertory Theatre sets full return to Sarasota theater season

Even as questions about safety protocols remain to be determined, Asolo Repertory Theatre plans to return to a full season of indoor productions next season beginning with a fall staging of the tribal rock musical “Hair.”
In an online video Wednesday afternoon, Producing Artistic Director Michael Donald Edwards announced a lineup that is primarily filled with the same plays and musicals that were intended to be presented over the last two seasons but were canceled or postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic. ....

William Skaggs leads the Players Centre through a time of transition

But Skaggs got a clear view of how people felt about the theater as longtime actors, volunteers and audiences took a last look backstage during a series of farewell tours.
“I knew and I understood when we had conversations about me coming here that many people considered the Players to be family,” he said in a recent interview. “One of the most impressive things in my time here is how often that term is used and it’s unprompted and people really care about this 91-year-old organization known as The Players.”
That became obvious again two weeks ago when volunteers started posting photos of work crews demolishing the old building, knocking down exterior walls and exposing some of the painted posters representing shows presented years ago. ....

“I’ve always loved to self-produce. I had a company of my own in college at Mississippi State University, focused on children’s theater, and I knew that I would want to self-produce again,” McFatrich said.
He first talked about starting a company a couple of years ago, and once the pandemic hit, “I thought if the world doesn’t come back to normal by October, I’ll pursue this and try to do something small and safe.”
That something was the two-person show “Brian and Luke’s Amazing Terrific Jaw-Dropping Fantastical Spectacular Tremendous Excessive Live Holiday Jamboree,” in which McFatrich starred outdoors with actor, teacher, dancer, director and choreographer Brian Finnerty. ....

Asolo Repertory Theatre breaks ground on Koski Center Expansion Project | Sarasota

The Asolo Repertory Theatre has long used a repurposed industrial space for its production rehearsals.
It’s worked for the most part, but it’s not been ideal, Producing Director Michael Donald Edwards said.
That will start to change soon. The Asolo Repertory Theatre is moving forward with its Koski Center Expansion Project, a long-planned addition to existing facilities on Tallevast Road.
Staff and supporters celebrated the start of the initiative with a groundbreaking on Tuesday, April 27. A number of the Asolo Rep’s closest donors and supporters gathered at the Koski Center grounds Tuesday morning to hear words from staff and board members. ....
