Forest Department rules out any foul play A strong negative lightning flash with a peak current of 39,000 amperes at 9.28 p.m. killed the 18 elephants in Kandali Proposed Reserve Forest in central Assam’s Nagaon district on May 13, an autopsy report has concluded. Making the exhaustive report public on Thursday, Assam Environment and Forest Minister Parimal Suklabaidya ruled out any foul play such as a conscious attempt of electrocution, revenge killing, poisoning. The report prepared by the North Eastern Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (NERDDL) in Guwahati with meteorological inputs from the North East Satellite Application Centre at Umiam in Meghalaya also negated any anthrax outbreak. ....

According to preliminary reports, lightning is said to be the cause of death | 14 May 2021 6:26 AM GMT Guwahati: Assam Environment & Forest Minister Parimal Suklabaidya visited the spot in Kothiatoli, Nagaon where 18 elephants died. Lightning is said to be the cause of the deaths but an investigation is underway to rule out any other possibility. The elephants including three calves died on Wednesday night at a hill in the Kundoli proposed reserve forest in the Kathiatoli range. The post-mortems are underway. Minister Suklabaidya expressed shock and grief at the death of so many elephants in such a tragic manner. An emotional Suklabaidya prayed for peace of the departed souls and spoke about the relationship that people of Assam share with elephants and how much they are loved and respected. ....
Black panthers transfer from Assam Zoo to Ambani owned zoo was through ‘barter policy : Assam Min Guwahati, Feb 23 (UNI) Assam Environment and Forest Minister Parimal Suklabaidya today said that the transfer of two black panthers from Assam state Zoo to Reliance-owned Greens Zoological Rescue and the Rehabilitation Kingdom at Jamnagar in Gujarat was done following government policy of barter system of wildlife animals. “The black panthers were sent to Jamnagar zoo in exchange for their help to bring four Zebras from Israel. Animal exchange is part of zoo management. We frequently undertake animal exchange programme with various zoos in the country and with zoo outside the country,” Mr Suklabaidya said an issue which has triggered a controversy ahead of Assembly elections slated in April. ....
