The stream that won't run clean: Owhiro Bay residents still living with pollution

Owhiro Stream has two main tributaries, one of which drains Kowhai Park Gully, where for decades all manner of rubbish has been thrown into the landfill.
Regional council general manager for environment management Alistair Cross said the landfill was under investigation for two key matters; unconsented earthworks, and non-compliant discharges causing discoloration of the streambed.
“The investigation is continuing and no enforcement decisions have been made.”

As early as 2016, the regional council had received complaints about discolouration and foaming in the stream, and the subsequent investigation determined it was the result of discharges from the landfill. An abatement notice, fines, and a cost recovery order were issued. ....
