Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 26) Three of Luzon’s major dams opened spillway gates after the southwest monsoon dumped heavy rains over the weekend.
The Ambuklao Dam in Benguet province released water as the reservoir hit close to its spilling level of 752 meters early Monday morning, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration. Water discharged from the dam flows to its downstream Binga dam.
Luzon’s biggest dam, the San Roque Dam in Pangasinan, serves as the catch basin for the Ambuklao-Binga dam systems. San Roque Dam’s water level on Sunday was way below its spilling level of 280 meters, enough to contain spills from the other two dams.
Published July 25, 2021 9:49am PAGASA on Sunday morning announced that Ipo Dam in Norzagaray, Bulacan will release water at 12 noon. This is due to the heavy rainfall caused by the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat). The weather bureau said Ipo Dam’s water level at 7 a.m. was 100.56 meters. At 6 a.m., it was at 100.51 meters, an increase of 0.79 meters over the level at 6 a.m. on Saturday, 99.72 meters. Ipo Dam s normal high water level (NHWL) is 101 meters. Residents near the banks of Angat River and low-lying communities in Bulacan were asked to be on alert for a possible increase in water level as the Ipo Dam in Norzagaray, Bulacan is scheduled to release water Sunday noon, July 25, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.
As of 7 a.m., PAGASA said the dam’s water level was at 100.56 meters and is expected to rise further due to heavy rainfall induced by the southwest monsoon or “habagat.”
“Ipo Dam management will conduct spilling operation at 12 noon with approximate initial discharge of 38 cms (cubic meters per second),” it said in a hydrological dam situationer issued on Sunday.
