Impact group picks up volunteer slack at community garden Unmute LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - The Hunger Task Force is looking for more volunteers to help maintain the Kane Street Community Garden. Garden Coordinator Todd Huffman said it s a lot of work to plant, weed, mulch and harvest fresh food at the North Side garden. This is everyone s garden, Huffman said. Last year we virtually asked the groups to not come. You know it wasn t allowed with the health care rules. He said they need more groups to volunteer for upkeep. There are always weeds, weeds in every direction, so we ve never once caught up on the weeding so there s always work for groups, Huffman said. ....

(WKBT) – Aquinas High School students are helping grow their community. Students from Aquinas’ IMPACT club helped water, weed and tend to the crops Monday at the Kane Street Community Garden. Senior club member Stephanie Skemp says the garden is a project every club member can get behind. “Even though we are all from different areas of La Crosse, if we come here and see what we can bring to those who are less fortunate, I think it really binds us together and really builds a sense of community,” Skemp said. ....

William P. “Bill” Gilles, 53, of Onalaska, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, June 5, 2021, while attending a Brewer’s game in Milwaukee with his family by his side. Bill was born to Richard and Beatrice Gilles in La Crosse, WI in 1968. Bill attended St. Pius X Grade School and was a 1986 Aquinas High School graduate. Bill was proud to be a Blugold. Growing up, Bill enjoyed playing all sports and he especially excelled at wrestling and football. He enjoyed playing in the Catholic Youth League and at Aquinas. In college, Bill was a three-year varsity-winning defensive end for the St. Norbert Green Knights. One year, as a Green Knight player, he was invited to try out with the Green Bay Packers practice squad. ....
