TESDA inaugurates its first urban Aqua Farm

(MANILA BULLETIN)
TESDA Secretary Isidro Lapeña said the project signifies the importance of “farming in our urban areas, particularly to our marginalized sectors who can make farming as a source of their livelihood even if they are living in the city, without going to the remote farming areas.”
“For this Urban Aqua model Farm, we only need an area of more than 70 square meters to establish a fish farm that can help feed a family. This program is definitely aligned with TESDA’s thrust of global competitiveness, social equity and poverty reduction for the Filipinos,” he said in a statement. ....

Proposed salmon farm sparks opposition - Mount Desert Islander

Proposed salmon farm sparks opposition
GOULDSBORO Opposition is mounting to a large-scale salmon farm in Frenchman Bay before the project’s backers have formally submitted an application to locate roughly 30 net-pens at two sites north of Bald Rock and The Hop islands. In a related move, a citizen’s group is calling for the Maine Department of Marine Resources to toughen its rules regarding aquaculture leases that range widely from mussel to oyster cultivation in coastal Maine. BAR HARBOR   Where do baby scallops come from? Why is a light necessary to mark buoys? Will the farmed scallops increase the local wild scallop population? These were some of the questions fielded by owners of Acadia Aqua Farms during a scoping session on Friday.
One of Maine’s largest mussel farming operations, the company has submitted an application for a 20-year lease on a 68-acre suspended gear operation for farming scallops in Frenchman Bay. It is located 4,000 feet from shore and 2,700 feet northeast of Sunken Ledge.
About 25 people attended the scoping session that took place via the video conferencing platform Zoom. Those in attendance included shoreline neighbors, an Acadia National Park representative and others interested in learning more about the proposed aquaculture farm.  ....
