Having lived on that stretch of I-40 most of my life, I decided to help you make a list of things to do in the cities between Amarillo and OKC. Groom Most of us are familiar with Groom. Groom is home to the massive cross that towers above the high plains on I-40. If you ve never stopped to check it out, they do have a little museum that had a replica of the Shroud of Turin the last time I stopped by. They also have the Stations of the Cross as part of the entire experience. ....
By News Director Jared Atha Sales tax numbers are in for area cities for the month of March, and they appear to be on the uptick. Elk City is once again over $1 million at just under $1.2 million – a 17% increase when compared to a year ago. Why the dramatic increase? City Treasurer Jennifer Rainey says she suspects it is because of a lot of out of town visitors due to recent activity at the softball / baseball 5-plex at Ackley Park West. Rainey also credits the influx of tax dollars to recent stimulus checks that have been distributed over the last 12 months. ....
By News Director Jared Atha Elk City has encountered a good problem to have: attracting out of town visitors to visit the baseball / softball 5-plex fields in Ackley Park West. The problem? Parking. City Manager Tom Ivester says currently Kids Inc., who conducts league play at the fields, currently has about 140 teams combined for this season’s baseball and softball leagues, and says nearly every weekend, tournaments are being conducted at the venues – which creates issues with parking. Ivester says last weekend was no exception. Ivester says despite the inconvenience of having to walk a littler farther, the parking lot between the two complexes are big enough to handle the anticipated amount of vehicles. ....

By News Director Jared Atha The turf project at the 5-plex baseball and softball fields in Elk City’s Ackley Park West and the baseball field in Ackley Park has officially been paid for. Sort of. During the latest Elk City Commissioner’s meeting the commission approved the final pay application to Hellas Construction, the company that the city had bought the material from and who installed the turf. The budgeted item was for just under $275,000. However, City Manager Tom Ivester says the city will put a hold on the check. The other bill was for damaged lights that Hellas allegedly damaged during the construction process. Ivester said that Hellas was going to deduct the cost of repair off the final bill. He says he wants to make sure that that deduction was indeed honored. ....
