Column: UC deal with Elsevier boosts open-access publishing

Print
The University of California is declaring victory in its long battle with the world’s largest publisher of scientific, technical and professional journals.
UC announced Tuesday a new four-year deal with Netherlands-based Elsevier that will make all research published by UC authors in some 2,500 Elsevier journals subject to the open-access publishing model.
That’s a model in which researchers pay a fee to publish their papers in the journals, but the papers are made available to readers for free and without journal subscriptions.
We remained focused on our long-term goals, and standing by them was a path to success in these negotiations. ....

Journal of Medical Internet Research - University of California and JMIR Publications Launch Pilot to Advance Open Access to UC Research

Journal of Medical Internet Research
The University of California and JMIR Publications today announced a two-year partnership that will make it easier and more affordable for researchers from all 10 UC campuses to publish in one of JMIR’s 30+ open access journals. The pilot, which provides subsidies for faculty who publish with JMIR, is UC’s first such agreement with a native open access publisher.
Under the agreement, the UC Libraries will automatically pay the first $1,000 of the open access publishing fee, or article processing charge (APC), for all UC authors who choose to publish in a JMIR journal. Authors who do not have research funds available can request financial assistance from the libraries for the remainder of the APC so that they can publish completely free of charge. ....

Not-for-profit publisher makes big move toward open access science

 E-Mail
Canadian Science Publishing (CSP) a not-for-profit publisher of peer-reviewed STEM journals is excited to announce a new transformative open access publishing agreement with the University of California (UC) that will offer unlimited open access publication for UC researchers publishing with its journals.
The transformative agreement is the first of its kind for a Canadian journal publisher and a pivotal first step for CSP and its international authors and readers. The Ottawa-based not-for-profit is exploring how to shift from subscription-based business models to models that make it easier and more affordable for researchers to publish their work open access.
Access to peer-reviewed science has never been more important. As a not-for-profit navigating the switch from subscription to open access, we see transformative models as a sustainable way to open up the scientific literature, says Suzanne Kettley, Chief Executive Officer at CSP. ....
