Agawam, West Springfield councils vote to oppose Comcast data cap

Agawam and West Springfield are signing on to the network of cities opposed to Comcast’s now-delayed plans to charge data fees to its broadband internet customers.
“This is an example of corporate greed in the middle of a national and statewide declared emergency,” said Councilor George Kelly at the Tuesday meeting of the West Springfield Town Council. “I wish the attorney general of Massachusetts would look into this, because that is a criminal offense.”
On the same night, the Agawam City Council also lent its support to the movement, which calls for the television, telephone and internet conglomerate to abandon its plans to surcharge heavy internet users starting this summer. Agawam voted 10-0, with one councilor not present. The vote in West Springfield was unanimous, 9-0. ....

The use of Native American mascots at public schools has again come into question as a Massachusetts bill proposes eliminating the practice, which Native Americans say mocks their culture.
Sen. Jo Comerford, a Northampton Democrat, refiled a Senate bill, SD 417, that would make the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education create regulations prohibiting public schools from using Native American epithets in team names, logos or mascots, as well as references to Native culture or specific tribes. Rep. Nika Elugardo, a Boston Democrat, and Tami Gouveia, an Acton Democrat, refiled the House version. ....

Athol High School has begun collecting ideas for a new sports brand and mascot, replacing the “Red Raider” Native American caricature the Athol Royalston Regional School Committee voted last month to scrap.
The “Red Raider” logo depicted a tomahawk-wielding cartoon figure with a big nose and spear over his shoulder.
The move away from racist depictions of Native Americans follows those at Frontier Regional School, Turners Falls High School and Mohawk Trail Regional School, as well as the Washington Redskins renaming themselves – temporarily – the Washington Football Team – and this week’s announcement that ownership of the Cleveland Indians will r ....
