Lafayette Parish Police Chief Says Doctors Saved His Life Duson police chief Kip Judice is preparing for surgery after he suffered a near-death experience over the weekend. According to a post on his Facebook page, Judice suffered an acute respiratory attack on Saturday. His family rushed him to the emergency room, where Judice says doctors saved his life. Judice says when he arrived at the emergency room, his oxygen levels were at 65 percent. Judice also said a doctor described him as looking like grey death. Judice says doctors found a polyp on his vocal cord. According to Judice, doctors told them the polyp got stuck in his airway while he was breathing. Judice is scheduled to undergo surgery on Monday to remove that polyp. ....
Easter Marred By Three Shootings, Deadly Hit-and-Run Easter in Acadiana turned in to a bloody Sunday. Three shootings happened in three different cities this Easter, with at least one of the victims landing in the hospital. In Grand Coteau, one person is in custody after a shooting at a gas station. Police say that shooting happened after a fight between two people during which a third person tried to separate the combatants. The victim is in the hospital. His condition is unknown. In Ville Platte, police are investigating a shooting during an Easter gathering at Hope Park. Police Chief Neal Lartigue says two people were grazed by bullets. That case remains under investigation. ....
St. Landry Attempted Murder Suspect Arrested An alert off-duty sheriff s deputy is credited with helping Opelousas police catch an attempted murder suspect. Desmond Richard was arrested over the weekend on attempted second-degree murder and gun charges. As of Monday, he remains in jail. Police Chief Martin McLendon says the off-duty deputy spotted Richard and called police to tell them of Richard s location. Police found the car Richard was driving, pulled him over, and arrested him. Police say they found a stolen gun in Richard s possession while executing the arrest.

St. Landry Kidnapping, Murder Suspect Pleads Guilty The man who kidnapped and murdered a Ville Platte woman last year will spend the rest of his life in prison. Philip Dewoody received three consecutive life sentences after pleading guilty this morning to first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping, and aggravated rape. The first-degree murder charge stemmed from the death of Joyce Thomas. Thomas disappeared from Ville Platte last March. State troopers found her body was found days later off I-49 between Sunset and Opelousas after Dewoody led them to it. The aggravated rape and aggravated kidnapping charges stemmed from a separate incident involving a separate victim. Dewoody was on parole when he committed the crimes. ....
A man is facing negligent homicide charges after St. Landry Parish sheriff s deputies say an infant died while in his care. According to investigators, Nicholas Ducote left his two-year-old and nine-month-old children in a bathtub while he went into another room to fold clothes and play video games. Investigators say Ducote checked on his children a short amount of time later after hearing a splash. That s when, investigators say, Ducote found the nine-month-old unresponsive in the water. Ducote called a relative and emergency services for help, but the child died. The two-year-old was not injured. The coroner ruled that the nine-month-old died as a result of an accidental drowning. Sheriff Bobby Guidroz says Ducote was criminally negligent while caring for the child, resulting in the charge. ....
