UNC racial equity expert takes stock of Biden action on systemic racism


On his seventh day in office, President Joe Biden moved to define his presidency in terms not often heard at the White House emphasizing racial equity and systemic racism.
Now is the time to act, Biden said before a round of executive orders addressing racial bias in housing and the nation s prison system.
It s very, very refreshing to have the leader of the free world use language like systemic racism and talk about the difference between equality and equity, said UNC professor Dr. Deborah Stroman, who teaches the terms every day while training leaders and organizations to combat and address racism at the Greensboro-based Racial Equity Institute. ....

Small fraction of COVID vaccine wasted in NC, hospitals and clinics say


CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WTVD) Despite the delays in the COVID-19 vaccine rollout and understandable frustrations, health care workers across the Triangle say very few doses have gone to waste.
The Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines are both extremely temperature-sensitive and vials must be used within hours of being defrosted. But because so few doses are available nationwide, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention requires all states to report whether any doses have expired or been thrown out.
Some states have reported losing hundreds of doses due to malfunctioning freezers or, in one case, a Wisconsin pharmacist who is accused of intentionally spoiling doses by taking them out of cold storage. Fortunately, central North Carolina hospitals and health departments are reporting very few wasted doses, if any at all. ....

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted North Carolina resident Gracie Howell.
“It has brought the world to its knees,” Howell said. “My world was turned inside out and upside down by COVID. I lost my job. My entire formal career is gone.”
She ended up getting a new job and came across a trial for Moderna s COVID-19 vaccine at the University of North Carolina, taking part and getting her shots last September.
“As someone with excellent health, as an essential worker, I felt I had a responsibility to take part in the trial as well,” Howell said. “I had no discomfort, no pain, no fear.” ....
