An innovative new bill, HB267 (Rep. Steve Eliason, R-Sandy), would allow individuals who fear suicide to temporarily prevent their own gun purchases. Some argue that the bill won’t save lives. That’s not true.
The proposal is in effect an optional waiting period. Waiting periods have been shown to reduce suicide by as much as 5%. And many people would sign up. In one study of a high-risk population, 46 said they’d participate. There were 339 gun suicides in Utah in 2018. These numbers suggest the new bill could save between 5-8 lives each year. ....

Utah bill would enable people to relinquish gun rights during a crisis

People at risk of self-harm could put their names on a “no gun” list to stop themselves from buying a firearm in the midst of a mental health crisis, under the provisions of a bill now moving through the Utah Legislature.
Rep. Steve Eliason, R-Sandy, who’s sponsoring the legislation, said the measure “isn’t going to save a lot of lives, but I believe that it will save some lives.” And it has won support from mental health and gun rights advocates alike, both of whom see it as a way to prevent suicide deaths in Utah without involuntarily stripping people of their firearms. ....
