An Elegant Sufficiency, or the Curious Case of a Victorian Meme

Sound and vision blog
PhD placement student Rowan Campbell writes:
It sometimes strikes me just how much chance and canny timing have to do with the way we experience the world. While cataloguing audio files, I came across the following speaker (born 1944, London) who tells us that her great-grandmother used to say “I’ve had an elegant sufficiency”, which then became a family saying for when you have had enough to eat.
It is fairly common for kitchen table lingo to be submitted to the Evolving English WordBank, and having never heard it before, I assumed it to be one of these idiosyncratic family phrases and thought no more of it. ....

Hollins Critic, The – Encyclopedia Virginia

SUMMARY
The Hollins Critic is a journal of literary criticism published five times a year through Hollins University in Roanoke. Founded in 1964 by Louis Rubin Jr., the journal was intended to promote new writers of fiction and poetry through an experimental form the editors described as “literary journalism.” When the journal debuted, they announced their plan to deliver in each issue a critical essay on “a new book by an important younger writer [that] will be considered at some length, not only in its own right but in its relationship to the writer’s other publications.” The
Critic later chose to publish issues featuring established writers who had added new noteworthy volumes to their works. Not all of the journal’s subjects have been American writers. ....

Bruce Piephoff has been writing songs, poems and music since he was 19

Bruce Piephoff is a meanderer. He s a wanderer, a poet, singer/songwriter, a folky philosopher. He s been settled down now for quite a while with wife Laura and son David, but his thoughts still take him for strolls in a lush, wordy forest.
A basketball player in high school at Grimsley, Piephoff s musical journey took him off the boards and onto the road. Initially planning to play basketball at UNC-Chapel Hill, he decided he wasn t destined to be a baller and investigated his musical curiosity instead. He says that going to Chapel Hill was like going to Paris for him, a revelation that aroused his journalistic and musical neurons and set him on a path he would follow on a roundabout sort of fashion from then on. ....

Letters, Dec. 9

To the editor:
After seeing the images included in Becky Johnson’s “Public may finally get chance to speak at Waynesville meeting” story and reading a Dec. 2 letter to the editor, it’s clear that the town board is only getting to hear voices that represent one side of the masking mandate (which shouldn’t be a debate at all).
Perhaps if the statewide mandate were actually enforced in the meeting spaces, the science-believing, empathetic Haywood County residents would come out and share their thoughts, but as has been pointed out, we’re not willing to risk our health to conspiracy nuts who clearly don’t care about anyone but themselves. ....
