Editorial Roundup: New York

In fact, some political experts thought we’d lose two.
“We’ve lost two or more seats every Census since 1950,” said Dan Lamb, lecturer in Cornell’s Institute for Public Affairs. “This is a break in the trend line that’s positive for New York. We’re not losing as much clout as we have in prior cycles.”
Losing only one representative seemed to be good news for the Empire State, until we heard that the difference between losing one seat and keeping our 27 representatives came down to fewer than 100 people filling out the census last year.
Yes. If 89 more people had responded to the once-a-decade nationwide count, we would have kept our seat in the House. ....

Police issue warning on gatherings in village | News, Sports, Jobs

Large parties, like these from 2019, are being frowned upon in Fredonia.
Fredonia police are issuing a warning to residents and college students: parties and large gatherings will be facing scrutiny in the coming weeks.
Philip Maslak, department police chief, noted in a news item to local media on Monday that state Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s Executive Order regarding gatherings is still in effect. Parties and or gatherings outdoors are limited to 25 persons at this time, while maintaining social distancing guidelines.
Maslak’s message comes at a time when large groups of students have gathered for what is now termed “Not Fred Fest.” The event, last held in 2019 before the pandemic, led to 106 arrests with more than 200 offenses and no violent felonies. There were two felony-level cocaine possession arrests. ....

Drug Take Back day is Saturday | News, Sports, Jobs

The 20th National Prescription Drug Take Back day will be Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, community partners and the Drug Enforcement Administration will provide the public with an opportunity to prevent medication abuse and theft by clearing out their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs.
