Empty beaches and closed wineries. These were the realities that many holidaymakers had to face after adjusted Level-3 lockdown was implemented to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
President Cyril Ramaphosa imposed Level-3 lockdown regulations on 28 December and announced its continuation on Monday evening, which include a complete alcohol ban. Wineries were forced to close and restaurants were restricted due to the curfew starting at 21:00. Visitors and locals alike were grateful for some reprieve as the Hermanus Cliff Path and other coastal paths remained open. But hikers and nature lovers held their breath while the Overstrand Municipality deliberated on whether Fernkloof Nature Reserve would remain open. It remained open for hikes with protocols observed. The dust seems to have settled after a spat on social media about the Hermanus Country Market, which was due to be shut down permanently but instead has been given the green light temporarily.
Liza van Coppenhagen, organiser of the market, had sent a letter out to traders on 3 January informing them of the permanent closure of the market.
She explained that the market is no longer sustainable because during the first lockdown period from March until August last year the market could not operate, but the costs remained the same – with no reductions in rental or insurance except for electricity usage. “The costs amounted to just over R180 000 over this period with no income,” reads the letter. ....
