Letters Turkish fascism I think comrade Conrad’s article on fascism fails to achieve all the sixfold intention he states (‘Misusing the F-word’, May 27). He’s certainly right to insist upon clear and historically rooted definitions and also on his remarks against broadening the scope of the term in an inflationary and only pejorative manner. However, he bends the stick too much on to the other side. The main problem is that he’s too stuck in history and the ‘classical’ cases of fascism, to the extent that this leads him to ignore the obvious fascistic sides of current phenomena he investigates. He intends to evaluate it globally, but only touches on his own native British case. He seems to be right to assume that fascism is not a current threat in the UK. I’ll leave aside the internal strategic debates of the country’s leftist organisations and continue on Conrad’s passing remarks about Turkish leftists’ evaluations of the nature of Turkish regime ....

Letters PCS merger? The Public and Commercial Services union is claiming that its forthcoming conference in June will be the most democratic across the trade union movement. Branches can register as many delegates as they like, but only one will be allowed to vote and they will use their card vote on every motion (the number of votes each branch will have will be the number of members of that branch). I have no quibble with branches having more delegates than they would normally be allowed to have - this means, in principle, far more members might attend and observe this online conference. I never forgot my first conference (in 1981, I think), so enthralled was I by the cut and thrust of the debates, and the politics - I never missed a subsequent conference for the next 35 years until I retired. ....
Letters Free speech The Labour Campaign for Free Speech has postponed its next meeting again, from April 24 to May 29, citing “diary clashes” - fair enough, if a little disappointing. Even more disappointing, I thought, was the agenda item (and I can no longer find the agenda on the website) on the discussion over a difference of opinion revealed at the opening conference in February. This was regarding the ‘Charter for Free Speech’, item one. This reads, at the moment, in full: “Without free speech and a free press there can be no democracy “We stand for unrestricted freedom of speech and publication. Open debate and the right to question ideas, conventions, rules and laws are fundamental democratic rights. We oppose any form of blasphemy laws - religious or political. The concentration of media ownership in the hands of a few billionaire proprietors undermines free journalism. We support the development of an alternative and labour movement media ....
