Youth team from 100 Black Men of Madison wins national financial literacy contest

Teamwork and commitment led to winning a national financial literacy contest â the first ever for a team supported by 100 Black Men of Madison.
The feat was especially impressive given the decision to enter the national 2020 Virtual Dollars and $ense Youth Investment Competition later than normal because of another academic commitment, team member Angela Abongwa said. It gave the group about two weeks to come up with a presentation when they hadnât learned the material yet.
âTo me the most difficult part was definitely the time crunch of it,â said Abongwa, a senior at Verona High School. âIt was just trial and error.â ....

If a measure of a society is how well it takes care of its young, the past nine months are a damning indictment of our nation.
Parents and teachers have been working overtime under impossible circumstances., and states have prioritized keeping gyms and restaurants open over keeping schools open. A result is that about 48 percent of all students are still in full-time virtual instruction (another 18 percent are in hybrid), according to Burbio, a company that tracks school calendars. These rates are higher among poor students and students of color. This is shameful private schools holding classes under tents on spacious campuses while poor students are sitting outside McDonalds to get internet access. ....

Helping Hands 2020: Children offer hope to others in a world complicated by COVID-19

Children know: Itâs been a tough year.
Nearly 200 of them from across the region wrote letters to Helping Hands this fall on behalf of someone whoâs had a particularly hard 2020.
Each of the studentâs letters described how they would use $200 to help someone else. Helping Hands, sponsored by the Wisconsin State Journal with the support of generous donations from readers, selected more than three dozen of those letters, and youâll find excerpts from them here.
All of the writers showed a sensitivity to the special hardships this year brought: the COVID-19 pandemic, economic devastation for small businesses, serious illnesses such as cancer complicated by job loss, and a thinly stretched health care system. One girl even wrote about her community swimming pool, which had to close this summer because of the pandemic. She described how much that pool had meant to her in summers past â a reminder that some of childhoodâs greatest, simplest plea ....
