FAIRMONT– The Fairmont School Board heard from Fairmont High School Speech co-coaches, Kathleen and Erik Walker, on Tuesday. The pair spoke about their team’s successful but challenging season which took place virtually.
“Normally they perform in front of others at other schools but we were always at Fairmont High School. We got to know each other very well,” Kathleen said.
This year there were about 30 students grades 9-12 on the team.
“This year’s success was great and I attribute it to us staying the course. Whereas I think some other teams at other schools struggled with this, we actually thrived,” Kathleen said. ....

Fairmont area students
At their most recent meeting, the Fairmont School Board discussed the failure rate of students. Board member Mike Edman said that the fail rate or about to fail rate was around 30 percent. He further stated that did not meet his expectations, and we agree.
The Governor is responsible for shutting things down totally. In-person learning is the way to go, and those opting out of that aren’t being held accountable. Overall, the fact is that parents and students are more responsible than teachers or the administration.
Campground

Fairmont schools talk bonding | News, Sports, Jobs

Sentinel Correspondent
FAIRMONT– During the Fairmont School Board meeting on Tuesday evening, Matthew Hammer from Ehlers Public Finance Advisors presented the board with results from the sale of the district’s $6.73 million general obligation bonds following the special election which took place on Feb. 9.
“I come to you from Ehlers today with some really good news. We took bids this morning and ended up with a 1.87 percent interest rate,” Hammer said.
Hammer said that pre-sale estimates they had previously provided were at a 2.67 percent interest rate.
“In big numbers, what that means is we’re looking at debt service levies for property tax levies over the life of the bonds of about $1.8 million less than pre-election estimates,” Hammer said. ....

Public Works facility
The Fairmont City Council remains divided on the need for a new Public Works Building. Why? At $167 per square foot for a 50 year building, that is by far the best option. The current building desparately needs replaced. This has been six years in planning and a previous council has already approved it.
A $5 million building makes no sense when you have to build another building for $2-3 million to house all the equipment. That puts the cost near $8 million with a pole-frame garage that is a 20-30 year building, whereas a steel-frame building will last for 50-60 years. A new building is clearly the best option moving forward. ....
