On Sunday, officials at Fairmont State University welcomed home the original oil portrait of Elizabeth Dickey Fleming who is known as the first woman to serve as principal of a normal school. Fleming was the principal of Fairmont State Normal School, the forerunner to Fairmont State. ....
A home on Glenellen Avenue also was hit on Friday. No one was injured. A person reported that a home in the 600 block of Fairmont Avenue at Covington Street on the North Side was hit by bullets three times. One bullet went through the home’s front window, another hit the side of the house, and a third hit the back of the house, police said. The location is about four blocks north of St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. This apparently was the same gunfire that witnesses reported at 9:30 p.m. Saturday involving people in two to three vehicles shooting at each other on Covington Avenue at Fairmont Avenue. ....

As many as 31 million ballots had already been cast nationwide just days before the election, the New York Times reported. On election day, inside a small room in City Heights, volunteers moved in and out throughout the day in what capsulated the final day of get out the vote efforts to neighborhoods ignored by traditional political campaigns. The energy and enthusiasm of the election was also felt there.
