A small silver lining in finding out this week that Fairfield’s Chuck E. Cheese has closed is that after searching for it on Google, I finally discovered that the namesake rodent’s full name is “Charles Entertainment Cheese.” Who knew?
Kim Staton posted a picture of the restaurant’s front in the I Grew Up in Fairfield Too Facebook group and the letters and logo have been taken off the building. I remember hearing last year that the company had to file for bankruptcy and that wasn’t really a surprise with the Covid-19 closures, but once you remove the name from the building, it’s over.

Answers flooded in from the more than 10,000 members and they were varied and thought-provoking.
Some were easy to knock down, like Preston’s Furnishings, which was a staple on Travis Boulevard since 1957 but closed a couple of years ago and is now a different business. Some pointed to JCPenney, which opened in Fairfield in 1929 but is disqualified from this query as it did move from downtown to become the anchor for Solano Mall in 1972.
