The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors voted yesterday (Tuesday) to approve Hunter Mill District Supervisor Walter Alcorn’s suggestion that the community center be renamed after his predecessor, Catherine Hudgins, who retired from the board at the end of 2019.
The board directed staff from Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services, which operates the facility, to “work with the community” and report back with a plan for implementing the change.
Located at 12125 Pinecrest Road, the Southgate Community Center provides a variety of recreational, cultural, and educational programs, along with access to county and community resources. Recently, the facility has hosted regular COVID-19 vaccination clinics.

All sessions will run from 6:45 to 8 p.m. and will be hosted, depending on the date, either virtually via Zoom or in person (based on all appropriate CDC and Virginia Department of Health COVID-19 guidelines) at Mount Vernon Woods Park, 4014 Fielding Street, Alexandria.

The former Mount Vernon Athletic Club is currently undergoing minimal renovations and upgrades under the property’s current zoning to improve the facility’s functionality. The Department of Housing and Community Development, on behalf of the Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority (FCRHA), is leading the finance, design, coordination and overall project management efforts for the Phase I improvements, which include:

Fairfax County is changing up its Stuff the Bus food drive this winter to support increased demand for food while accommodating challenges presented by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Typically held twice a year, Stuff the Bus will kick off its 10
th year of existence with buses parked at select locations throughout the county from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Jan. 30 and Feb. 6.
During the two-day food drive, community members can stop by the buses to donate nonperishable food that will help restock local food pantries, which have reported an uptick in the need for food and drops in volunteer rates during the pandemic.
