Skylight Music Theatre turns children's words into songs about COVID


Having trouble finding words for the tedium and terror of the past year of COVID-19 pandemic? Trouble no more: Local children have done the work for you. 
As part of this year s KidsWrites educational program, Skylight Music Theatre asked students in third through eighth grades to respond to the theme of Time Capsule. Through virtual workshops, Skylight teaching artists stimulated 1,650 pieces of student writing from 58 classrooms in Milwaukee Public Schools and other schools. 
Skylight composers and musical theater performers have adapted some of them into an online Time Capsule show, which will be available for viewing May 3 to June 13.
The young writers took on a year that included coronavirus disruptions, the killing of George Floyd, Black Lives Matter demonstrations and counterdemonstrations, plus a contentious presidential election and its jarring aftermath. th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Writing Contest, students throughout southeastern Wisconsin responded to the theme, “Keep Moving Forward,” from King’s address, “Keep Moving the Mountain” given at Spelman College in Atlanta on April 10, 1960.
