#Bulatlat20: Reaffirming truth-telling, defending press freedom
Bulatlat‘s commitment to human rights reporting and how it has remained true to truthtelling.
By JANESS ANN J. ELLAO
Bulatlat.
As an alternative media, it was expected to actively report on the worsening extrajudicial killings – at least one activist killed per week – and other forms of human rights violations under a bloody counterinsurgency campaign spearheaded by the now-convicted former General Jovito Palparan Jr.
While these were covered by
Bulatlat, human rights stories seldom hogged the headlines in the dominant media. This situation was similar to the early days of the late President Corazon Aquino, where, in the guise of upholding “news values” and blindly working on the narrative that “democracy” has been restored, human rights violations were no longer considered newsworthy. ....

'We are defending a sanctuary of learning and of life'

‘We are defending a sanctuary of learning and of life’
“We will defend the University of the Philippines, our sanctuary, as much as it has defended us,” Lalah, a Grade 12 Lumad student, vowed to a crowd of protesters during a mobilisation at the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman.
Members of the UP community assembled on 19 January at the steps of the historic Quezon Hall to condemn the unilateral abrogation of the 1989 University of the Philippines-Department of National Defense (UP-DND) Accord, the morning after Philippine Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana announced the questionable decision.
The accord lays down the guidelines on military and police entry to all UP campuses. This limits the power of state authorities to interfere with university operations, effectively protecting the freedom of faculty to determine what to teach and how it should be taught, and the freedom of students to think critically without danger. The accord, in other words, ....

Read Local! A brief guide to reading more Philippine Literature

This 2021, you can expand your reading list and consider these Filipino writers and publishers.

This 2021, you can expand your reading list and consider these Filipino writers and publishers.
National Publishers
The country’s biggest publishers often still have books worth checking out. Anvil Publishing has repackaged several Filipino classics for a contemporary audience, including Manuel Arguilla, Lope K. Santos, and the always fabulous Nick Joaquin. Books from the dearly departed Visprint Inc Bob Ong’s bestsellers, Agay Llanera’s heartfelt “Choco Chip Hips,” “Kikomachine,” and “Trese” comics have found a seco ....

Marcos said she understood Duterte when he said that women cannot handle the job of being the country’s president. She said her father, former Philippine president and strongman Ferdinand Marcos, also said the same to her.
“‘Yong mga reaksyon na ‘very misogynistic’ daw and ‘chauvinist’ na not a job for a woman, naintindihan ko yon. Kasi ang tatay ko sinasabi rin sa akin, na si Bongbong ang dapat pumasok sa pulitika, period. ‘Yong nanay ko, parati siyang very protective kasi bakbakan yan, eh (Contrary to reactions about the ‘very misogynistic’ and ‘chauvinist’ statement that presidency is not a job for a woman, I understand that. Because my father used to say that to me, that my brother Bongbong should be the one to enter politics. My mother is always very protective, because it is a battle),” she said in an interview over radio DWIZ. ....
