Japan mulls alternatives to Suez Canal after Ever Given shock

Tokyo, Japan – When the Ever Given, one of the world’s largest container ships, lost control in the midst of a dust storm and high winds on March 23, and became wedged across the Suez Canal, it was an event of international significance that also rekindled Japanese interest in finding alternative routes to Europe.
“The blocking of the Suez Canal accelerated things,” said James D J Brown, associate professor at Temple University Japan, even if the concerns about over-dependence on the canal have been around for a long time.
The canal is one of the most important arteries in global trade, and was completely blocked for six days. ....

Should Israel dig a new super-size Suez Canal?

A recent news item about a large transport ship that twisted sideways during a windstorm and blocked the far too narrow Suez Canal, bottling up canal traffic for days, has resulted in suggestions from many sources that Israel dig a second canal, thereby taking the strain off the old canal and eliminating shipping problems created by its shallow, narrow width.
After more than a week of research my answer to that suggestion is: AMEN!
Why? For many reasons, all of which show that while it would take a while to build it, it is eminently doable, and the result would be of tremendous value to Israel, Egypt, and the entire world. ....

Benchmarks: October 10, 1913: Atlantic and Pacific waters meet in the Panama Canal

On Oct. 10, 1913, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson pressed a button in his Washington, D.C., office. At that moment, more than 6,400 kilometers away, about seven metric tons of dynamite exploded, clearing the final obstruction in the Panama Canal. Deep within the Culebra Cut, waters from the Atlantic Ocean finally met waters from the Pacific Ocean, marking the end of major construction on the 77-kilometer-long canal.
Breaching the Isthmus of Panama a strip of land only a few tens of kilometers wide linking North and South America would save ships from having to sail around Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America, thousands of kilometers out of the way. It was an achievement four centuries in the making. ....
