Snake Venom-Derived Super Glue Stops Bleeding In Seconds
Canadian and Chinese researchers use the venom of the lance head snake to create material that stops bleeding.

Researchers with the University of Western Ontario have used a blood clotting enzyme called reptilase or batroxobin to create a glue that is so strong in its properties that it can stop bleeding in mere seconds.
Western University bioengineer Kibret Mequanint used the venom of the lancehead (Fer de Lance) snake (
Bothrops atrox) to develop a body tissue adhesive that is created using the batroxobin in a modified gelatin that Mequanint says can be packaged in a small tube for a potentially life-saving application. ....

Kiwi conservationist Pete Bethune has walked out of a hospital in Costa Rica today after a deadly snakebite almost claimed his life two weeks ago.
He was bitten by the highly venomous Fer De Lance snake in a South American jungle just after Christmas.
Initially fearing he wouldn t make it out alive, Bethune managed a difficult three-hour trek, clambering and dragging himself through unforgiving terrain to reach his boat. ....

New Zealand conservationist Pete Bethune out of hospital after near-fatal snake bite

He said he was relieved to have come through the ordeal, but had some continuing health problems.
He said the leg that was bitten was also still stiff and he would need physiotherapy.
He also has an extended bladder, which meant his bladder had been over-stretched, and required a catheter bag for about another week.
Speaking from his happy place , Bethune said a medical device used on his leg yesterday showed there was some dead tissue, but hopefully it would heal in time.
His right leg, where he had been bitten, was still swollen and the muscle was weak.
In terms of flexibility it is pretty non-flexi at the moment, but I can walk, and my walk is not too awkward. Every time I start walking it s really, really tight, and then after about 20 or 30 metres it starts to gradually free up, so I really just need to clock up some miles on my leg and get it used to that movement again and gradually stretch it out. ....
