Even though the first day of summer is June 20, with Memorial Day weekend in the rearview mirror, it’s safe to say the unofficial start of a new season has arrived. The extra sunshine, bustling downtowns and end of school herald fun times that remind me of the pre-pandemic days.
The town of Silverthorne is looking to get in on that rest and relaxation mindset with June’s First Friday. The event kicks things off with live music from Frisco Funk Collective and a gymnastics demonstration from the Silverthorne Storm gymnastics team from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, June 4, at the Silverthorne Performing Arts Center, 460 Blue River Parkway. ....

Seasonal hiring sputtering for restaurants, resorts across Colorado

DENVER It’s opening weekend for Colorado businesses that hire seasonal summer workers. But many industries that do are still in desperate need of help, including construction companies, hotels and, especially, restaurants.
Bob Kato, who operates two restaurants in Frisco, shared his dire-straits details with me for a story published earlier this week. He still needed four to five more people for the kitchen at Island Grill at the Frisco Bay Marina. Without them, the place will probably have to close on some days during the busy summer season.
But the seasonal labor shortage in his community has more to do with the scarcity of housing for workers. Houses and rentals snapped up by out-of-area buyers before and during the pandemic have left seasonal staff with few affordable options. ....

Frisco Town Manager Nancy Kerry announces resignation

Frisco Town Manager Nancy Kerry publicly announced her resignation Thursday in what she called a “very difficult decision” to step down from the position to spend more time with her family.
Kerry was named town manager in December 2018 and said she plans to stick around likely until late April or early May to ensure there is a smooth transition to an interim town manager and ultimately a replacement.
In an interview with the Summit Daily News, Kerry said she loves her job, but the infrequency with which she was able to visit her family over the past year due to the pandemic has been difficult. After the sudden death of her sister-in-law, Chrissy, who she called a “bright light,” Kerry decided it was time to move closer to family. ....

Heavy traffic expected for Frisco vaccine clinic Thursday

The Summit County Public Health Department is planning another large-scale vaccination clinic at the County Commons in Frisco on Thursday, and officials are warning residents about heavy traffic expected in the area.
County officials have been looking at ways to help reduce traffic backups from the vaccination clinic this week, including having extra volunteers on hand and additional signage and cones to help with traffic flow. Officials are also asking members of the same household to carpool to their appointments, even if they are at different times.
“We meticulously analyze each clinic that has been conducted and constantly update our operations to make the process as smooth as possible,” Director of Emergency Management Brian Bovaird said in a news release. “With that said, we know there will be heavy traffic, and we want everyone to be aware of the delays that should be expected when we conduct a vaccination clinic of this size.” ....
