Following Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s announcement of a national lockdown on Monday night (04/01), which took effect from midnight last night (05/01), the colleges and the University have issued further warnings to students regarding returns and teaching in Lent term. Johnson’s announcement stated that schools and universities should provide teaching for students online until the end of the February half term, and that only university students studying practical or health-centred courses should receive in-person teaching. The restrictions on social contact, travel and public services are broadly the same as the first lockdown in March 2020. Vice-Chancellor Stephen Toope, in an email sent to all students yesterday (05/01), told students that those “who travel to Cambridge will have to stay here for the duration of the national lockdown.” ....

Cambridge Sustainable Food (CSF) has collaborated with Cambridge City Council (CCC) and Cambridge City Foodbank (CCF) to distribute over 500 hampers to local families in need this Christmas. The hampers consist of non-perishable “treats” provided by CCF, fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables donated from local producers and provided by CSF, and a gift organised by the Council. CSF is “an innovative and growing partnership of public, private and community organisations in Cambridge and the surrounding villages [who] work with each other to promote a vibrant local food system all along the supply chain and in our community.” The organisation strives “for a fairer, more sustainable food system which supports the community and the environment.” ....
Cambridge University Votes to Amend Rules That Curtailed Free Speech A number of academics and commentators congratulated the university for “a win for freedom of speech.” “Congratulations to Arif Ahmed, member of the Free Speech Union’s Advisory Council, on his victory in Cambridge. The pro-free speech amendment got 1,316 votes, compared to 162 for the other side. Cambridge has now restored its reputation as a defender of academic free speech,” the Free Speech Union (FSU) wrote on Twitter. Over 1,500 members of the Regent House, the 7,000-member governing body of Cambridge University, voted on Tuesday on Ahmed’s three amendments for the “University Statement on Freedom of Speech,” originally approved by the University on Dec. 9. ....
