Sugarcane farmers have been urged to take advantage of the forecasted dry conditions until November, states the Fiji Meteorological Department in its Fiji Sugarcane Climate Outlook from August 2021 on harvesting and crushing.
Fiji Met stated the outlook did not show any extreme weather.
“In the absence of extreme weather conditions, the sugar content is likely to improve,” stated Fiji Met.
“The predicted weather should be favourable for harvesting and farmers should take advantage of the prevailing conditions to harvest green cane.
“Those farmers that are planning to plant in September/October should start preparing the land and keep it ready for planting. ....

A heavy rain alert is now in force for the eastern half and southern parts of Viti Levu, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, Lau and Lomaiviti Group.
A trough of low pressure with associated cloud and showers lies slow moving over the southern parts of Fiji. It Is expected to continue to enhance the moist easterly wind flow over the group.
The Fiji Meteorological Department says eastern half and southern parts of Viti Levu, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, Lomaiviti and Southern Lau Group can expect occasional showers with isolated thunderstorms and heavy falls.
“Showers is expected to gradually increase to rain from tomorrow and become frequent and heavy with squally thunderstorms.” ....

A heavy rain alert remains in force for areas from Sigatoka to Nausori,Kadavu, Southern Lau group and Lomaiviti Group.
The Fiji Meteorological Department says a low pressure system lies just to the west of Fiji.
“Associated trough of low pressure with cloud and rain affects parts of the group.”
The weather office says there is a risk of flooding of low lying and flood prone areas during persistent rain.
