FASTags to be Mandatory from February 15: All You Need to Know

FASTag is being made mandatory for all vehicles in India from February 15 midnight. The central government earlier reportedly extended the FASTag deadline for the vehicles in India from January 1, 2021, to February 15, 2021. The Union Ministry of Road Trasport and Highways (MoRTH) had issued a notification in November 2020, making FASTags mandatory for all vehicles from January 1, 2021.
The FASTags have also been made mandatory for the registration of new four-wheelers and are being supplied by the automakers or the dealerships. A valid FASTag will be required for obtaining new third party insurance from April 1, 2021.
To reduce vehicular traffic at the toll plazas, the Government of India (GOI) has mandated all toll plazas, pan India, to make toll payments electronic. With this mandate, all vehicles traveling through toll plazas will have to mandatorily pay toll charges using FASTag. ....

NHAI said issuer banks were unilaterally mandating some threshold amount value for the FASTag account/wallet, in addition to the security deposit amount.

The National Highways Authority of India on Wednesday said it has decided to do away with the requirement of maintaining a minimum amount in FASTag wallet. The move aims at ensuring seamless movement at electronic toll plazas.
In order to increase the FASTag penetration to ensure seamless movement of traffic and to reduce avoidable delays at the toll plazas, NHAI has decided to remove the mandatory threshold amount for the FASTag account / wallet, which was paid by the user in addition to the security deposit for the passenger segment (Car/Jeep/Van), NHAI said in a statement. ....

The Central government has been increasing the last date of FASTag implementation since a long time. However, in a recent meeting, the Union Road And Transport minister of India, Nitin Gadkari clearly mentioned that there will be no more extension for the implementation. According to a
report,the last date of getting a FAStag for your vehicle will be February 15.
He, while addressing questions of the media, said that by December 2020, 73.36% people registered with FASTag, as opposed to 44.31% in 2019. It has also been revealed by the minister that the monthly toll collected through FASTag stands at Rs 2,088.26 crore. ....
