Fifty-two illegal Chinese entrants were deported from Ho Chi Minh City on Thursday, local police said.
This is the second time this year that illegal entrants in the southern metropolis have been deported.
These migrants were brought into Vietnam via less-traveled border paths with the help of Vietnamese. They then entered HCMC on coaches to either look for jobs or cross the border once more into Cambodia.
Over the past month, HCMC police have busted over 108 illegal Chinese entrants, but the actual number might be much higher. As the coronavirus crisis escalates in surrounding countries, illegal entrants to Vietnam are deemed at high risk of Covid-19 infection, representing a threat to the domestic coronavirus fight. ....

Ho Chi Minh City has apprehended 108 illegal entrants over the past month, though authorities admit many more may have gone undetected, posing a significant coronavirus risk.
Illegal entrants first entered Vietnam through the land border, waterways and even less-traveled paths to avoid detection, before reaching HCMC, Nguyen Sy Quang, deputy director of the municipal police department, said Wednesday.
Police are ramping up measures to strike at human smuggling rings and are requesting HCMC People’s Committee to instruct authorities to heavily fine or even revoke the licenses of residences accommodating illegal entrants. Hotels and motels that do so would face criminal investigation, he added. ....

The People’s Procuracy of HCMC announced yesterday that it had approved the Investigation Security Agency’s decision to begin legal proceedings against a 28-year-old flight attendant for “spreading contagious disease to others”.
