Tories accused of 'unleashing chaos' after conflicting advice given on travel restrictions


THE Tories were accused of unleashing dangerous chaos today after confusion over the easing of travel restrictions led to thousands flying to amber and red-list countries. 
Ministers gave conflicting advice on whether holidaymakers can travel to amber-list countries, with Environment Secretary George Eustice saying it was permitted to visit “family and friends.” 
But he was later slapped down by Downing Street, which said holidaymakers must not travel to amber countries except in “exceptional” circumstances.
 
Confusion reigned after international restrictions on travel were lifted on Monday, meaning it is no longer illegal to leave the country. 
Shadow health secretary Nick Thomas-Symonds said: “The Conservatives’ border policies have unravelled into dangerous chaos within a matter of hours since international travel was opened up. ....

Vaccine hesitancy should not be tackled with “pointing the finger”, one commentator has said, after the Health Secretary expressed “frustration” over people not taking up the offer of a Covid-19 jab.
Dr Zubaida Haque, the former deputy director of the Runnymede Trust, a race equality think tank, said that vaccine hesitancy was being used as a “red herring” by the Government.
The remarks come after Matt Hancock voiced his frustration that some people are still not getting the coronavirus vaccine, amid fears of the spread of the variant first identified in India.

Mr Hancock said the majority of people admitted to hospital in Bolton, which has seen the biggest outbreak of the B1.617.2 variant, had been eligible for the jab but had not taken it up. ....

Invitations are going out today to 37-year-olds to get the coronavirus jab amid fears that the spread of the new Indian variant could jeopardise future plans to ease restrictions.
Text messages are being sent today asking people to book an appointment – to be followed tomorrow by 36-year-olds – as the roll out moves down the age groups.
Bolton has been worst hit by the new variant along with Blackburn with Darwen - where there are a total of 483 cases in the two areas. ....
